If you are really experienced at cutting trees: We will be felling the trees too small to fall on the power lines or the road. (We're asking Xcel Energy to cut the large trees after we've cleared out the area for them to work.) We cut the logs into 4-foot lengths so people can take them away for firewood. Exceptionally fat and heavy logs will be cut into smaller pieces so they can be lifted. Branches are cut off the logs, and tree tops can be dropped into the slash trucks with branches still on.
Carry or drag branches to trucks that will take them to a slash drop-off site. Bring water, snacks and wear long sleeves and long pants, work gloves, hats, sunscreen. Wear hiking boots if you have them. We have safety vests.
Volunteers will fill your truck or trailer with branches to be hauled to the slash drop-off. You drive it there and unload it with a volunteer helper. We have a trick; put an old tire (or similar) on the cab-end with a chain or rope tied to it, and the free end of the chain or rope at the back. At the slash site, tie the rope or chain to a tree or stake and drive away slowly a truck-length. Slash pulls right off!! retrieve your tire and chain, and come back for another load.
If it doesn't work, you and a helper will need to unload. We''ll cover the slash fees and your gas. Just submit receipts to coniferrotarywildfire@gmail.com
