The landscape along the north side of the building has been wild with meadow grass and native shrubs and trees. Last year a volunteer trimmed the grass to define the space. Our objective is to "park out" & maintain the grass, even out the grade as is reasonable with gravel rakes or the tip of a spade, remove sticks and surface rock and clear away trimmed brush and thatch.

1) Remove the Mullein weeds at the north east corner of the shed & building. Tidy up the side of the shed and east side of the landscape behind.

2) Collect the brush trimmed and remove the branches. Carry the debris to a truck and trailer for disposal. Collect grass thatch or any trimmings from any volunteers with string trimmers.

3) Use a rake or spade to clear and even the grade for a walking path between the shed and the building to the back (North) lawn area.

4) The Center would like to prepare the north east half of the greenspace for picnic table seating & conversation space. Rake the grass to remove old thatch, clear away loose stones, lightly even the grade as could be reasonably managed with a spade tip and rake.

5) If you have a string trimmer, bring the appropriate protective gear (ear and eye protection, pants and sturdy shoes). The Center does not currently have the ability to maintain the greenspace extending to the west, but would greatly appreciate knocking down the grass growth and grooming to keep the greenspace parked out.

Lawn bags will be provided. Bring gloves and wear shoes for uneven ground. Some rakes and tools will be on site, but plan to bring any tools you think you might use to be sure you have something. Imagine what we could do with this space. This is just a beginning!

On this day, ladders, step ladders, tarps, covers and painting supplies are delivered to the site.

1) The tables on wheels in the classroom will be moved to either the center of the room or out in the larger room.

2) Any items left in the room will be covered with plastic protection. Using tape, items such as a fan, door and the white cupboards will be covered and protected.

3) The ceiling is already black but its boundary edge will need to be taped and protected for a clean line. The floors will be protected enabling the baseboard to be painted. A clean tape edge will be laid and tarp or plastic over the floor below.

4) Wiring (like stereo wires) will be removed from its run along the corners or walls, coiled and attached to the ceiling to remain out of the way.

5) Nails, hooks and screws will be removed. Blemishes will be sanded and holes patched. A primer paint will be applied as needed over larger patched areas.

Tools on hand: Pliers, Wire cutters, Screwdriver/power tool, scissors, Masking tape, spackle and sandpaper.. Bring gloves, a hat or bandana for head covering, and a sense of humor.

The brush along the  north property line will be cut to maximize the greenspace available to the Center. Horizontal branches will be cut to maximize the usability of the space for walking or seating. Care will be take to keep the integrity of the vegetation that remains. The intention is that a few or one person can define the space and decide what to keep while leaving the resulting brush to be gather and cleared away on the Epic Day.

The facility needs some TLC to embrace its new role as a community kitchen and gathering place. Pick a small area and make it shine.

1) The cupboards need to be emptied and cleaned. Contents clean and returned.

2) The refrigerator & freezer needs to be cleaned.

3) Tables in the kitchen area can be rolled away, and the floor cleaned underneath. Clean the tables and return. The floors are concrete and will need to be vacuumed and mopped. We have two mopping buckets and two vacuums available. May want to bring your own.

4) The dining room tables, chairs and concrete flooring underneath need cleaning. Move tables to one side of the room, or outside depending on volunteer numbers, to clean and mop the floors.

5) One volunteer is needed to operate a carpet cleaner to clean the 5 x 7 rug at the dining room entry. Carpet cleaner is provided.

6) Dusting in the Lending Library in the cafeteria. Dusting as needed. General dusting has been ongoing, but the bookshelves have been neglected.

There are two utility sinks for filling buckets and discharging grey water. Bring gloves, a bucket, your favorite general cleaner if you prefer one. A mop, broom & dust pan or vacuum with attachments for either dusting or floor if you choose.  We have 3-4 brooms on site. Any rags, cloths or sponges you can spare. Some rags and dust cloths will be provided. There is general cleaner on site.

The classroom will be prepared for painting the day before. Any prep work that was incomplete may be addressed at the start if needed. There will be a general painting guideline established at the beginning. Rollers, roller extensions, brushes and paint trays will be available. We hope to have at least four A ladders and a few stepladders on site. The walls and baseboards are all the same color. We are not painting the ceiling.

1) Ladder work: Volunteers will be needed to paint the transition edge of the ceiling and the wall, as well as painting the corners of the walls down to a height where people on the ground can continue. Painting from the ceiling edge down the wall about 6-8" so people with rollers can overlap without touching the ceiling trim. Bring a container such as a pint size yogurt container to hold paint to use with the brush.

2) Walls: Volunteers will use rollers and paint trays to coat the walls. Aim for even paint on the roll, use overlapping V pattern. Aim for even coats on the wall, especially where any roller paint will overlap with brushwork at the corners, edges or around obstacles.

3) Corners and obstacles: Volunteers to work around obstacles by painting carefully around them 6-8" so that people with rollers can overlap without difficulty.

4) Baseboards. The walls and baseboards are all the same color. Take care to keep the floor transition clean. Paint the top of the baseboards and up the wall 6" so people with rollers can overlap with ease.

When your part is done, be prepared to let the work dry. Find another task you can help with such as dusting or raking, or take a break. We will apply touch up paint in the afternoon to complete the room as needed.

Volunteers may be working on the full project from start to finish. There will be opportunities to try new things throughout the day. There will be an advisor on site to help you find a useful task if space is too crowded or time permits. Have fun, help your community and make new friends!
