Chatham Geological Park Cleanup
The overgrown geological park
One of the mineral samples at the geological parkIn 2023, our Epic Day of Service Project was to clean up a geological park located on the grounds of Chatham High School, which had been established by one of the science teachers roughly 30 years ago with large specimens of interest, like a meteor fragment, petrified wood and mineral samples. Over time, it had been abandoned to the invasive plant life which took over. Two years ago, we went in with heavy equipment and cut down invasive trees and shrubs, pulled weeds and raked out debris. This year, our project will be to clean out what has grown up in the interim to prevent the area from becoming overgrown again. We also plan to evaluate the area to see if there is something we can do to upgrade the area on a more permanent basis. This project is slated for Sunday, June 1st - weather permitting. The students in the Chatham school district would benefit most from this project, but the general public is allowed to visit the geological park as well.
