Salvation Army Family Hope Center
Join the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs at the Salvation Army Family Hope Center to help Restore and Organize their facility.
1. Restore & Organize Dry Storage
Volunteers will begin by moving items currently stored in the chapel back into the dry storage area. This includes:
- Food
- Supplies
- Water
- Equipment
Once everything is moved, take time to organize the space so items are easy to find and access. Group similar items together and make sure commonly used supplies are visible and reachable.
2. Sort & Store Toys
In the chapel, volunteers will:
- Sort through all toys
- Group similar toys together (e.g., stuffed animals, games, educational toys, etc.)
- Decide which toys should:
- Go to the donation area
- Be placed in extra storage
When putting toys away, organize them neatly so they are easy to locate later. The goal is a clean, intuitive system where similar items are stored together.
If times allows and/or we have enough volunteers, we will also try to tackle some of the below opportunities.
3. Organize Donation Areas
Focus on tidying and sorting:
- General donation area
- Hoodie bins
- Jacket racks
Sort all excess donations into three categories:
- Keep – Items that will stay and be distributed; place these in their proper locations
- Donate – Items to be sent to The Salvation Army thrift store
- Toss – Items that are no longer usable
Make sure clothing is neatly arranged and easy for volunteers/staff to browse and distribute.
4. Prepare Items for Clients
Before the event, clients will complete forms indicating their needs (clothes, toys, shoes, books, etc.).
Volunteers will:
- Review each family’s form
- Select appropriate items based on their requests
- Organize the selected items for each family in a large bag and label it with the family name and room number
As items are gathered, keep a count of what is given (e.g., number of clothing items, toys, etc.) to help track distribution.
