Weeding & Mulching - Quaifes Road, Halswell
IMPROVE YOUR LOCAL FRESHWATER SYSTEM - The event aims to bring together the community in a fun and friendly atmosphere.
This community planting session is organized by Christchurch City Council and supported by Riccarton and Lincoln Rotary Clubs.
Quaifes Road, Springlands is a drainage park that has recently undergone a significant land-use change, transitioning from farmland to a restored wetland environment. This transformation has been driven by strong community involvement, with volunteers—including local schools—planting native species throughout the area to enhance biodiversity while supporting effective land drainage.
Why is weeding and mulching required?
Many of native plantings are now nearing maturity. To give them the best opportunity to continue growing and thriving, the site would benefit from ongoing weeding and mulching. These actions, weeding will reduce competition from weeds, prevents seed spread improves airflow, and mulching (wood chips) helps suppress weeds, improve soil moisture retention, soil heath and prevent erosion. Overall these activities support healthy plant growth and enhance the overall appearance of the park.
As the native plantings mature, they are attracting increasing amounts of wildlife. While this is a positive ecological outcome, it also brings an increase in pest species such as rats, mice, and stoats. Now that the initial planting phase is complete, volunteers maintain a network of traps across the reserve to monitor and control these invasive predators.
Project benefits
This project represents a successful community conservation effort, with volunteers responsible for planting and maintaining much of the reserve. The site has reached a point where the vegetation is becoming largely self-sustaining; however, intermittent working bees are still needed to maintain momentum. Targeted maintenance helps suppress weeds, encourages self-seeding of native plants, and ensures the long-term health and resilience of the wetland ecosystem.
