Kāinga Preservation Group Launch Day

Rotary Ōtautahi Passport has partnered with the Kāinga Preservation Group to host the launch of Predator Free Kāinga.
The Kāinga community is one of only three South Island groups (and the only one in Canterbury) to have been awarded a Community Backyard Trapping Grant by Predator Free NZ in their latest funding round. To support the community in kicking off their predator control and habitat restoration project, we invite all Rotarians to come out to Kāinga and lend a helping hand in an epic day of service. Learn about the unique ecological environment of Kāinga and the wider Styx River / Pūharakeke catchment, the endemic and endangered bird species in the wetlands around Kāinga, and the importance of predator control and habitat restoration in safekeeping their survival. Watch trapping demonstrations, get to grips with trapping etiquette, including safe practices and understanding residents’ reservations; participate in trap-building exercises, learn about the geology of Kāinga, and the native plants suited to the coastal and wetland environment, and commence habitat restoration works and plantings. Come and be part of an exciting environmental exercise in historic Kāinga: bringing back the birdlife from Bridgend to Brooklands
Location: 72 Kainga Road (opposite 65 Kainga Road)
Time: 10am – 2pm
