Period Equity Project
Periods. They’re uncomfortable to talk about, and they’re uncomfortable to experience. Let's change that.
Data from Share the Dignity, an Australian charity that provides period products to people across the country, reveals that 64% of people who menstruate have found it difficult to afford period products. South Australia records one of the highest rates of period poverty, with 66% of people who menstruate unable to afford these period products.
This is especially true of young people who shared that they often miss school due to their period. This was the case for 63% of young people in school. More information on the statistics of period poverty can be found here.
We want to support our local young people to remain at school and help them access the resources to do so, which is why the Rotary Club of Lightsview are assembling 400 Period Equity Packs to provide to four schools in our local area.
If you are unable to donate period products or underwear, you are welcome to donate an amount that will go toward purchasing these products to go into the packs. You can donate here: https://events.humanitix.com/period-equity-project-rotary-club-of-lightsview.
In the spirit of Rotary’s areas of focus of Supporting Education, and Improving Maternal and Child Health, let’s keep our young people in school and help them to thrive no matter what their circumstances!
*Each Period Equity Pack will contain various types of period products (pads and tampons), lip balm, a sanitary bag, and helpful support services*
If you are interested in helping club members assemble the packs at a club meeting, send us a DM on Facebook or keep an eye out on our Facebook page for event details on when we’ll do this!
For the Epic Day of Service, club members will be packing the Period Equity Packs and writing cards with inspirational messages to go in the packs.
